  16. Traceroute serves as a valuable network debugging tool.  The way in
  17. which it is currently implemented has the advantage of being
  18. automatically supported by all of the routers.  It's two problems are
  19. the number of packets it generates and the amount of time it takes to
  20. run.
  21.  
  22. This document specifies a new IP option and ICMP message type which
  23. duplicates the functionality of the existing traceroute method while
  24. generating fewer packets and completing in a shorter time.
  25.  
  26. This memo defines an Experimental Protocol for the Internet
  27. community.  Discussion and suggestions for improvement are requested.
  28. Please refer to the current edition of the "IAB Official Protocol
  29. Standards" for the standardization state and status of this protocol.
  30. Distribution of this memo is unlimited.
